Short Term Trip Testimonial — Sam Perdue

“I want to share with you 10 ways this trip [to Thailand] radically changed my spiritual life and how it connects to the Bible.”

I wanna share with you 10 ways this trip has radically changed my spiritual life and how it connects to the bible. The reason is because before this trip I felt a period of spiritual dryness. I felt that I was falling into the ways of the world little by little with the influence of kids at public school. I just was a bit overwhelmed and used that as an excuse not to read the word when now I realize that’s when i need it most. And if i’m being completely honest with you, even last sunday there was a prayer and worship night that I didn’t go to because I didn’t feel the desire to do so. So this list has encouragements, challenges, lessons, and reaffirmations i’ve acquired thus far. At the end of any of you have anything to add on i’d love for you to share but my hope is that this will encourage you and remind you of the lessons we’ve experienced on this trip.

    • Prayer is powerful and prayers answered.
      • Something in my life that has been lacking is prayer. And this has been something for my whole faith walk that has been a challenge for me. Matthew 21:22 says “And whatever you ask in prayer, you will receive, if you have faith.” This trip has been a living testimony to this verse Jesus gave. It’s been especially encouraging to me when we pray in groups. There’s been some special moments for me like when us guys were in our room and we just stopped and took a knee to pray for Paul or even today when me and Graham got to pray with Model. But then also just my own prayers and our group prayers too have been heard and meaningful. One that was answered for me was on the second day I really prayed for God to open up a conversation and during lunch he did during lunch with Nurse and i’m confident God planted a seed in our conversation that I hope will flourish
    • The gospel is for ALL people
      • I was just reading in my quiet time this week in Acts 2:39 that “The promise is for you and for your children and for all who are far off everyone whom the Lord calls to Himself” Seeing all the Thai believers here and the effort to bring others to Christ has been encouraging for me. The fact that we can be in America and others live across the world and hold fast to the same Gospel is incredible to me. It’s been reaffirmed this week since it’s been a while since i’ve been over seas. Singing worship songs with other Thai believers in both languages throughout the week has been so powerful for me because it truly shows the Gospel is meant for all people.
    • I’ve been encouraged by the Thai kids boldness to believe
      • I think of the verse Ann liked during church which is Psalm 40:15-16 “Let those be appalled because of their shame who say to me, AHA AHA. But may all who seek you rejoice and be glad in you; may those who love your salvation say continually, Great is the Lord” I really feel a connection to the hardship of being the only or being one of few Christians in school. For me obviously I have my brothers but other then them of all the 2000 people at Leesville i’ve met very very few Christians and only 2 who are willing to speak about their faith. To hear that Ann and all the Christian’s here face the same thing is both comforting and heartbreaking as I know the struggle. Here though, just saying your a Christian puts the Thai kids at risk of being persecuted and the fact that they stay strong in their faith in spite of that encourages me to spread my faith to those in America.
    • The ground is rough and hard to plant seeds
      • And I’ve felt this in China but again it’s been shown here in Thailand that it is difficult to spread the gospel. Like 8:5-8 says “A sower went out to soe his seed. And as he sowed some fell along the path and was trampled underfoot, and the birds of the air devoured it. And some fell on the rock and as it grew up it withered away because it had no moisture. And some fell among the thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked it. And some fell into good soil and grew and yielded a hundred fold.” Later Jesus explains each one and says the ones on the path are those who have heard  and the devil takes it away from them so they don’t beileve. The ones on the rock are ones who believe for a time but when testing comes they fall away. And the one in the thorns are those who hear, but keep following their own self and pleasures in life. This has really been displayed here on this trip so far.
    • God’s word is vital for evangelism
      • Psalm 119:105 says “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path”. Reading the scripture the week or two before this trip and it really affected my day to day life. This week, every day spending time in the word has greatly changed my perspective on the day. When i’ve read the scripture my heart has been more full and i’ve felt the Lords guidance in the word as i’ve read.
    • Learned from the kindness and non judgment of Thai kids
    • Ephesians 4:29 says “Let there be no corrupt talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up as fits for the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear” In America I often feel the judgment from others especially in public school. But here i’ve never heard a Christian nor nonchristian kid be mean to another. The Thai kids no matter the age, work together and don’t judge each other and it’s been super encouraging to me and bring that back with me and not judge others myself.
        • Encouraged by the spiritual maturity and unity of this team
        • Timothy 4:12 says “Let no one despise you for your youth, but set the believers an example in speech, in conduct, in love, faith, and purity.” This has honestly been one of the biggest encouragements for me. All of the guys in our room have greatly encouraged me whether it’s Jarrick’s sermons at church, me and Cooper going through Acts together, Grahams overall knowledge and closeness with the Lord, having conversations and night with Cam in the room about the word, or hearing Grants wisdom I’ve been SO encouraged by the maturity on this team. Not to mention the unity of this team. I’ve never heard a super serious argument break out between anyone and I really feel like we immediately clicked once we landed even though some of us didn’t know each other. This really displayed the unity of our team this trip.
          • Only God can work in our lives and others and in this world
