Volunteering with Kids: Why Investing In The Next Generation Is So Worth It

“Let the little children come to Me…for the kingdom of heaven belongs to them. ” – Matthew 19:14

Vacation Bible School has been the joy of my heart since I first attended in the “days when dinosaurs roamed the earth!”

My earliest memories are standing in a long line, going into “big church” and hoping I’d be chosen to carry the American or Christian flag or the Bible, as we pledged allegiance to each in the “opening ceremony”. VBS lasted two weeks- we heard missionary stories, sang hymns, memorized long passages of Scripture, and were told about Jesus.

How things have changed! But praise the Lord, our children are still hearing God’s Word being taught in powerful ways, still singing and worshipping Jesus, and still being told that He is THE Way, THE Truth and THE Life!

In my adult life, it has been such a blessing to serve in VBS and see how my children and grandchildren have grown in the Lord through their participation.

Last May I returned to Providence, my mother church, and heard that VBS was beginning in a few months.  So I eagerly signed up – but to my dismay, they had already enlisted their workers.  However, they said I could be a greeter and doorkeeper when the children arrived.

I willingly accepted, and what an incredible joy to see the children as they came – some eager and excited, some clinging to their mothers.  But as I observed the excitement during their activities, I saw them blossom as they worshipped and heard the “old, old story of Jesus and His love” (which never grows old!).

So, bottom line, God can use you in any capacity at VBS, and I can promise you that you will be fully blessed!

(And at age 94, I’ll be back again this year!)
